Three Corning teens charged with the July 9 murder of a 24-year-old Red Bluff man entered not guilty pleas in Tehama County Superior Court on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Poly Duenas Sanchez, Gambino Nemecio Madera, and Lucio Nenecio Madera, all 19, have been charged with murder with special allegation of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm resulting in great bodily injury, and conspiracy to commit a crime with special allegation of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm resulting in great bodily injury.

Sanchez was the first suspect arrested in the death of Walter Dewayne Dani, who was shot in the head and right arm around 10:51 p.m., at the Crossroads Market at the intersection of Gyle Road and Highway 99W.

Sanchez was taken into custody on July 10 as he reported to the Tehama County Jail for his court-ordered work program.

Next to be arrested were twin brothers Gambino Nemecio Madera and Lucio Nenecio Madera, just days after Sanchez's arrest.

Dani, a woman and Dani's children were traveling to Corning on the night of the shooting when Sanchez and Dani agreed to meet at the Crossroads Market, according to court documents. Dani exited his vehicle when Sanchez and two other men arrived. A witness said she saw Dani come running around a corner of the market chased by two other men who were holding a "large rifle."

The men went to the back of Dani's vehicle where the witness allegedly heard Dani say, "Don't shoot me, my kids are in the truck," according to a report.

The witness then reportedly heard two shots fired.

When sheriff's deputies arrived at the site of the shooting, they found Dani on the ground in front of the market. He was pronounced dead on scene.

"We believe the motive in the shooting was a disagreement over a financial debt," said Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston. "Both the victim and the suspects are affiliated with the Norteño street gang, but we don't believe at this time that the homicide was gang related."

Reports state the witness was able to identify the three suspects charged with the murder.

A shotgun detectives believe was used in the homicide was recovered in the Corning area.

The vehicle used by the suspects during the shooting has also been recovered, as well as other evidence in the case.

All three suspects are being held in the Tehama County Jail on $1 million each.
